Urea
Prilled and granular urea into a tender-set, gas-cost-driven market — where the buying window closes faster than the planting season opens.
How does Wisemann Capital trade urea?
Wisemann Capital trades prilled and granular urea at 46% nitrogen minimum. Execution is timing-led: the global price is effectively set by a handful of large public tenders, and producer cost follows natural gas. We position purchases against that calendar, match specification to the actual application, and contract anti-caking terms against the voyage.
How a trade runs
Urea is the most tender-driven market we trade. Timing discipline is worth more than negotiation.
Application before specification
Fertiliser, foliar and technical grades are different products with different limits — particularly on biuret. We establish the end application first, because a cargo bought on a standard fertiliser spec will damage a diesel emissions system and burn a foliar crop.
Prilled or granular
Granular is harder and survives bulk handling and mechanical spreading; prilled dissolves faster and suits hand application or dissolution. Regional preference is real and affects resale, so form is matched to the destination market, not just the agronomy.
Timing against the tender calendar
Large public tenders — Indian purchasing in particular — function as the global price-setting mechanism. Buying into an announced tender is buying into a move already priced. We position coverage ahead of the window.
Voyage and caking protection
Urea is strongly hygroscopic. Anti-caking treatment, packing and stowage are specified against the actual voyage humidity, because a compliant cargo that arrives as a solid block is a total loss in a spreader.
Contract and payment
The credit is drafted against the inspection regime, with nitrogen, biuret and moisture certification named as documentary conditions so payment and specification are tied together.
Inspection and settlement
Independent sampling certifies nitrogen, biuret and moisture before shipment. Settlement follows certified analysis against the agreed penalty scale.
Contract specification
Typical parameters. Final specification is agreed per contract and certified before shipment.

What we manage on your behalf
Tender-set price risk
A small number of large public tenders effectively set the world price. Coverage is positioned against that calendar rather than against the current quote, which is where most of the achievable saving in urea procurement actually sits.
Gas-linked cost floor
Urea production is gas-intensive, so the cost curve is set by whoever holds the cheapest gas. Understanding where the marginal producer sits tells you far more about downside support than a price chart does.
Seasonality across hemispheres
Demand follows planting calendars north and south. A supply disruption landing inside a planting window moves price far more than the same disruption outside one — so timing exposure matters as much as sizing it.
Caking in transit
Hygroscopic product on a humid voyage can arrive unusable. Coating, packing and stowage are negotiated as specification terms, and we price the protection against the cost of a rejected discharge.
Grade separation
Technical-grade urea for diesel exhaust fluid and fertiliser-grade urea are not interchangeable in either direction. We keep the contracts, and the logistics, entirely separate.
What moves the market
Global urea trade exceeds $20 billion a year. At 46% nitrogen it carries more nutrient per tonne of freight than any alternative solid, which is why it is the default nitrogen carrier worldwide and why freight economics favour it even over long routes.
The market has recently seen extreme volatility on logistical and geopolitical disruption in the Middle East. We deliberately do not publish price levels on this page — a figure written today would be wrong within a quarter and worse than useless to a buyer making a coverage decision. Current levels come with a live enquiry, alongside where we think the window is.
Common questions
Frequently asked
Why is timing more important than negotiation in urea?
Because a handful of large public tenders effectively set the global price, and the market repositions around them within days. A well-negotiated differential on the wrong side of a tender is worth far less than an average differential bought ahead of one. Coverage strategy is where the value is.
Should I buy prilled or granular?
Granular is harder, survives bulk handling and mechanical spreading better, and resists breakdown in storage. Prilled dissolves faster and suits hand application or dissolution. Regional preference also affects resale value, so we match the form to the destination market as well as the agronomy.
Can I use fertiliser-grade urea for AdBlue or diesel exhaust fluid?
No. Diesel exhaust fluid requires technical-grade urea to a far tighter purity standard, with strict limits on metals and contaminants that would poison the catalyst. Fertiliser-grade material will damage the aftertreatment system. They are separate products on separate contracts and we do not blur them.
What protects a cargo from caking on a long humid voyage?
An anti-caking coating specified against the actual route and season, together with packing choice and stowage terms. Urea absorbs atmospheric moisture, which dissolves the particle surface and recrystallises into a solid mass. The protection is cheap relative to a cargo that cannot be spread on arrival.
Do you publish current urea prices?
No. This market has recently moved on geopolitical and logistical disruption, and any figure published on a website would be stale and misleading within a quarter. We give current levels against a live enquiry, with a view on where the buying window sits.
